We invite you to join the May 2024 ISGS eSeminar, which will be given by Professor Aivaras Kareiva on Thursday 23 May.

Layered Double Hydroxides: Sol-Gel Synthesis, Characterisation and Applications.

Aivaras Kareiva, Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Vilnius University, Lithuania.

Multilayered double hydroxides (LDH), hydrotalcite-type compounds or anionic clays are the names commonly used to describe a class of layered materials based on the crystalline structure of brucite (Mg(OH)2), with the general chemical formula [MII1-xMIIIx(OH)2]x+ (Am-)x/m]-nH2O. The LDH structure consists of positively charged metal hydroxide layers [MII1-xMIIIx(OH)2]x+ and negatively charged anions in the interlayer space. Typically, H2O molecules are also present in the interlayer space.

By changing the nature of the cations or anions, a large amount of LDH can be synthesised. New materials with specific properties can therefore be obtained. All LDHs with different chemical compositions share common features: a layered structure and the formation of mixed metal oxides after heat treatment. In addition, a common feature of LDH is the possible transformation of mixed metal oxides into a layered structure (LDH) using different aqueous media ('memory effect'). Typically, the surface of LDH samples is composed of agglomerated small platelet particles.

His research, contribution to the community and exciting career path were featured in the November 2021 issue of the ISGS Newsletter, available here: https://www.isgs.org/events/isgs-eseminar-may-2024/
