Interview with Vilnius University, Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Institute of Geoscience graduate Skirmantė Skrolyte, who currently works in the Norwegian Meteorology Institute
Why did you prefer this kind of study?
My favorite lesson in school was geography. Consequently, I had dreamed of relating my future to it since I was a teenager. One day, while I was in 10th grade, a sister-in-law told me about Meteorology and Hydrology studies that are closely related to geography. Her story intrigued me a lot, and I started wondering what it is. I searched for information about possible jobs related to these studies. I also had a consultation with my Geography teacher and I went to VU open day and talk with students about this kind of study. I ultimately decided I wanted to start my studies here.
What future vision did you have when you started your studies?
In my first year of studies, I didn’t have a specific future vision but after an internship at the Environmental Protection Agency, I realized I wanted to link my future to environmental protection and air pollution. That why I choose to delve into the topic of air pollution during my master’s studies. While did I have studies for a master’s degree I also manage to get a jog at the Environmental Protection Agency. After graduation, I decided to test myself abroad. So, I went to Norway. I started searching for a job where I could use my knowledge and education.
Did the result meet expectations? What activities you are currently engaged in?
I can say the current results exceeded my expectation. During my studies, I would not even dare to dream of working at the Norwegian Meteorology Institute. The Institute has several departments. I work in a department located in Bardafoss Airport. The work is mainly related to aviation and requires much knowledge from university in meteorology, climatology, and geography. The weather in Norway, especially in the northern part of the country is very changeable. This means this kind of job is very interesting and curious. I am very happy that before starting to work independently I had a chance to have comprehensive training and practice, which has provided a solid foundation under my feet. In addition, while working in this organization you are encouraged to improve your knowledge and skills all the time. There is an opportunity to practice in various projects, to go to various conferences in Norway and aboard. Great attention is paid to the quality of work and services, also we need always increase our knowledge baggage in meteorology and climatology.
Where did your success story begin?
I think my success story began with the accession to the Hydrometeorological master’s studies. Without a master’s degree, it would have been practically impossible to get a job with the Norwegian Meteorology Institute. But to get a dream job was a long and difficult process. I needed a lot of time and effort to learn Norwegian, which till when was completely unheard of. Many times I was disappointed, even not once I was not invited to work conversation. However, I didn’t give up and every time I found a new job posting I send to them my cover letter and resume. Until I was finally noticed.
Today, after many choices, fulfilled and unfulfilled dreams, can your story be called a “success story”?
I would definitely call my story a success story. But this story is not over yet. New goals and ideas are in my mind already.
